A Walking Contradiction

4/24/2009

I’m sure that every community in the world is full of paradoxes and contradictions.

When we lived in Seattle, one that blew my mind was that the same folks who liked to attend Labor Union Rallies with slogans like “Cut a Tree, Save a Job” were also adamantly against cutting down trees because of the impact that harvesting lumber has on the environment.

What paradoxes and contradictions do you see in your own community?

I fight against contradictions. Rand said contradictions don't exist when the premise is known. Reality has to exist in order for life to have meaning.

The biggest contradiction I see in the world of Christendom is when humility turns into insecurity/depression. It's an irrational extreme of "loving others" when you diminish your life you forget an important part of "love your neighbor as yourself". Loving your neighbor is impossible without love for God and yourself.

A very good point, Seth.
I, too, believe that self-depreciation is faux-humility.

Seattle thinks it is very green. Cutting down trees (that don't need to be cut down) isn't very green...so we don't like it. I always hear that we are sort of hippy-ish. :)

Crystal, although I don't miss being afraid of the Seattle "green police," I do miss recycling. It was kind of cool to throw out less than we recycled!

Here in our Orlando apartment we have to recycle on our own which is basically a contradiction itself because the fuel and carbon emissions it would take to get us to the recycling center are probably worse than any positive impact our recycling would have.

When we get a house, we'll have city recycling again- but not to the degree that we had it in the Northwest.
